The California - British Columbia Clean Energy Connection

Clean Energy Law Praised by British Columbia Premier

Sen. Pavley with British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell

I was honored to introduce British Columbia Premier, Gordon Campbell on the Senate Floor recently. Campbell, who has served as premier since 2001 praised California's Clean Energy Law (AB 32), which I authored while I was serving in the Assembly. He said the 2006 adoption of our landmark greenhouse gas reduction law sparked policy changes in British Columbia that helped to create more than 20,000 new clean-tech jobs.

"Californians need to know the enormous contributions they have made not just to the state but to the whole continent," Campbell told the Sacramento Bee. "The economic impacts are enormous."

During a dinner meeting with Campbell, he reiterated to me the economic importance of moving forward with implementing our clean energy regulations.

Thank you to Senator Pavley and Her Fantastic Staff for their Newsletter Updates!!

Last month the governor signed SB 535 (Yee). The bill seeks to incentivize the purchase of electric vehicles and plug in hybrids - the next generation of clean cars - by allowing them to access high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes. The bill will also give hybrid drivers who already have yellow decals an additional six months of HOV lane eligibility (extends the sunset date from January 1, 2011 to July 1, 2011).

Recycled Water SB 918 (Pavley) - Increases opportunities for water recycling in California by directing the Department of Public Health to develop criteria for safely using recycled water.

Stormwater AB 1834 (Solorio) - Allows landowners to install a rainwater recapture system to irrigate landscaping or recharge groundwater.

Women in Green Forum

Senator Pavley: I was honored to be the keynote speaker for the 1st Annual Women in Green Forum, an inaugural event bringing women in the sustainability field together.

The two-day event was held last week at the Pasadena Convention Center and focused on topics such as green building, energy efficiency, clean transportation, renewable energy, organic food and beverage, eco fashion, environmental media, natural health/beauty, urban planning, and waste diversion. The Forum was the largest national conference for women in environmental careers with a mission of bringing "trailblazers" together to create a community of women inspiring future generations toward environmental career paths.

I spoke about my bills to curb tailpipe emissions (AB 1493) which is now a national standard, and California's landmark Clean Energy Law (AB 32). I reiterated the economic and environmental importance of implementing our clean energy law, which has sparked more than $10 billion in clean tech investment since its passage in 2006. The audience was enthusiastic about California's future as the center of clean-tech jobs and investment.

Dear Friends,...(From Calif. EPA Secretary Linda Adams)

To the left of Senator Pavley, author of AB 32,  in the photo sits Mary Nichols, chair of the California Air Resources Board. On the right is Linda Adams, secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency.

Linda Adams, former director of the California Department of Water Resources, was appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in May 2006 as Secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency – making her the first woman to serve as head of the agency.

Immediately upon appointment, Secretary Adams was designated as Governor Schwarzenegger’s lead negotiator on AB 32, the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006. Adams is now working closely with states, provinces and countries around the world to develop a network of climate initiatives to achieve the greatest global reductions.  More>>>

California Secretary EPA, Linda Adams and B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell

Dear Friend,

As you probably have heard by now, there is a battle brewing to delay California’s clean energy and air pollution control standards.  And we need your support.

California’s climate change law, AB 32, the law that forever changed the rules on clean air, holds polluters accountable and requires them to reduce air pollution that threatens our health and our environment. AB 32 has moved California into the forefront of clean technology by creating opportunities for Californians to innovate and create new ways of protecting our environment and creating green jobs.

Because of leaders like you, AB 32 has created thousands of jobs, motivated an emerging economy and inspired businesses to partner with environmentalists. However, what is most important is that AB 32 has changed the way Californians think about clean energy and how we affect our environment.

We know that this is a global problem that requires a global solution. But change must start here with us, at the grassroots level. From here, it works its way up through our nations and around the world. Any signal of delay could be disastrous for a national commitment to reducing pollution.

Those who are attempting to delay our move to a clean energy economy maintain it will only “suspend” AB 32’s pollution and health requirements until the economy gets better. Well, we’re all waiting for the economy to get better, but in the meantime, suspending a law that has increased jobs, investments, innovation and public consciousness does not serve the people of California.

Join me in supporting AB 32 and the state’s commitment to growing clean energy businesses and technologies by signing up on-line today.

Your help will not only support our growing green economy, but will also help California for a better tomorrow.

Thank you,
Linda Adams

Passing The Torch, Common Goals See Nations Working Together

In Vancouver for the First Annual Leaders' Forum of the Pacific Coast Collaborative, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger began his day bright and early by carrying the Olympic Flame along the Sea Wall of Vancouver's beautiful Stanley Park. The flame glowed especially bright against the backdrop of the sky and Vancouver Harbor at sunrise.

British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell joined the Governator and both enjoyed fans and Olympic spectators who turned out by the thousands to watch this historical run on the Opening Day of Olympic Winter Games 2010.

Since mid-November when the flame arrived in Vancouver from Greece, each day it has been shepherded lovingly from one town to another, all over Canada. Torchbearers have carried it on horseback, in sailboats, on wheelchairs, on dogsleds and even by air when it went up to the Arctic Circle.

The Leaders' Forum of the Pacific Coast Collaborative brings together Washington State, Oregon, British Columbia and California to discuss the economy and environment and other areas of mutual interest.  In addition to Governor Schwarzenegger and Premier Campbell, Christine Gregoire, Governor of Washington and Oregon's Secretary of State Kate Brown were also in attendance.

The region of Oregon, Washington and B.C. is sometimes referred to as "Cascadia," alluding to more of a bio-regional and geographical area rather than geo-political boundaries.  To include California, with its forward-thinking policies on environmental issues and its wealth of natural resources, is a logical move.

The Pacific Coast Collaborative was formed in June 2008 as a "partnership for leadership, co-operative action and a common voice on issues affecting the Pacific coast region." Alaska is also a member of the collaborative. Its ongoing priorities are Ocean Conservation and Climate Change.

International icon Arnold Schwarzenegger was invited to carry the torch on the day of the Official Opening of the Olympics 2010 by his friend, British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell.  He was, in fact, one of 20 Americans to carry the Olympic torch during its 106 day relay throughout Canada. Two American Olympians also enjoyed the honor, Shawn Johnson, gymnast and darling of the Beijing games and Taekwando Olympic Gold champion Steven Lopez both ran with the torch during its cross-country journey.

Crowds shouted their warm greetings to the former Mr. Universe Body Builder as he passed by. "He looks so strong," remarked a child who got to see the Terminator up-close, in person.  As Schwarzenegger came to the point along the Stanley Park Seawall where he passed the flame off to Sebastian Coe, Chairman of the London 2010 Olympic Organizing Committee, one of the assembled fans yelled out a greeting in Ahhnold-speak "Arh, Arh, Get to the Choppa." The packed in crowd erupted in laughter, and even the Governator busted a smile. You had to be there.
