PoweRocks Mini Portable Charging Devices

by Green Blog Network

Portable electronic devices are lifesavers.  Who can live without their SmartPhone or cell phone these days? Apparently not 2.3 billion of Planet Earth's people.

In more tangible terms, more people have access to a portable phone today than to a toilet.
But when these little buddies - portable electronic devices - lose power, they're about as useful as dead wood.
Now, however, you can throw your worry out the window. Because Powerocks has invented the genius PowerBank and Magic Cubes.

These design-friendly, compact, colorful little devices charge your iPhone, your tablet, your SmartPhone, your cell phone and many other portable electronic devices quickly and efficiently. The PowerBank is equipped with both male and female USB connectors and it also comes with a multiple connector cable good for most devices. And each comes with two output cables so you can recharge two devices simultaneously.

A charged PowerBank is good for about an hour and can go all the way up to 12000 milliamps. It takes only about an hour to charge your PowerBank either directly from an electrical outlet or your computer. The charged PowerBank can last up to a reported 3-6 months. You can find them in many colors - from purple to silver to leopard print - and three power flavors: 6000 mAh,.9000 mAh and 12000mAh. This last one stores enough juice to recharge your iPhone up to 6 times.

You can pick one up for anywhere between $29 to £109. In Canada these stores have them available, perfect for stocking stuffers : )
Canadian Tire, Bell, Rogers, Telus, Bestbuy.ca, Telephone Booth, CostCo's Wireless, Futureshop.ca

These rechargers are also much more eco-friendly than the standard battery as you can get as many as 500 charges, at least, from one device.

"The Attitude of Free Life"  i.e. never be in an emergency or miss a call when away from home.

Online you can find these cylindrical little lifesavers at Powerocksusa.com

Above The Surface: Our Trash Satellites

By Liz Nelson/ Guest Blogger

Above the Surface: Our Trash Satellites

We live in a world where we purposely load tons of discarded trash into the planet's crust as a method of getting rid of what we don't want or have no method of reusing. As humans look for additional places on Earth to store various forms of waste, have you ever stopped to think about that which is orbiting our planet? According to NASA, there are over 21,000 pieces of trash that measure approximately four-inches in diameter floating above our heads at this very moment - which is only a small portion of the whole.

Although most of these pieces of trash are simply metal components from various remnants of space launches, they can pose as much of a treat to humankind as the trash here on Earth. One of the more disturbing facts is that the debris is estimated to triple in density by 2030. What does this mean for the future of humanity?
1. Telecommunications - A vast majority of our communications come from a satellite network in space. Although the density of orbiting trash isn't enough to disrupt signals that are broadcast yet, these bits of trash pose a threat as projectiles that can damage sensitive equipment. If one of these satellites is damaged to the point of rendering it inoperable, we simply send another one to replace it - increasing the amount of debris yet again.
2. Astronaut Safety - If you figure in that there are roughly half a million pieces of debris that are floating around Earth in various sizes all traveling at 17,500 miles per hour, the threat to human life while in orbit is amazingly high. For example, the Winchester .223 Super Short Magnum bullet can travel at speeds surpassing 4000 feet per second. These bullets deliver a deadly amount of force from the sheer velocity alone. Now take into consideration that these pieces of debris in space are traveling at 25,700 feet per second. The force delivered on impact wouldn't be anything short of devastating regardless of the size of the debris. An astronaut performing operations in space would have very little chance of survival if struck by one of these pieces.
3. Future Endeavors - With the amount of deadly metal trash circling our planet, future projects may be far more difficult to accomplish as time goes on. Every time we send a new satellite or shuttle into space, more debris is left behind in low orbit. As the shuttle needs to approach speeds of more than 17,000 miles per hour, it is already traveling at amazing speeds in order to achieve an orbital position. What if one of these four-inch diameter pieces of debris flies into the shuttle's window as it is achieving those speeds? It may be like the shuttle hitting a solid surface at more than 25,000 miles per hour.
4. Earth Bound - Unlike the trash that is buried in landfills here on Earth, space debris can cause a great deal of immediate damage should it be pulled in by the planet's gravitational pull. Various places around the globe have experienced close encounters of the trash kind. Sometimes, the debris that lands in the United States doesn't even belong to the country. In March of 2011, a tank from a Russian Zenit-3 rocket made an impact crater in the hills of Colorado.

Yes, even American trash can make an unexpected re-entry. In 1997, a 580-pound US Delta II rocket fuel tank nearly impacted an occupied farmhouse. If it's expected that the trash in orbit is to triple, the threat to life on the planet will triple as well. Without warning, one of these larger pieces of debris could re-enter the atmosphere and cause a great deal of damage on impact. Although the only report of
space debris actually hitting someone only "brushed" her shoulder, an inch in the wrong direction could possibly have torn her arm out of its socket.

While it's imperative that we monitor our waste materials here on the planet's surface, we need to also pay attention to that which is over our heads. While much of the debris can burn up in the atmosphere, large pieces have no problem barreling towards the surface of Earth at incredible speeds. If we want to enjoy the technological nuances of today's society, effort needs to be put into cleaning up our planet both on and off of its surface.

'GMO OMG' - Documentary Film

"GMO OMG"
A Documentary by Jeremy Seifert

Submarine Deluxe Will Release Theatrically on September 13th, 2013

** OFFICIAL SELECTION: 2013 BERLIN FILM FESTIVAL **

GMO OMG made its world premiere at the 2013 Berlin International Film Festival.  Screen Daily called the film "powerfully provocative" and "a subject that needs to be focused on."

Today in the United States, by the simple acts of feeding ourselves, we are unwittingly participating in the largest experiment ever conducted on human beings. Each of us unknowingly consumes genetically engineered food on a daily basis. The risks and effects to our health and the environment are largely unknown. Yet more and more studies are being conducted around the world, which only provide even more reason for concern. We are the oblivious guinea pigs for wide-scale experimentation of modern biotechnology.

GMO OMG follows one family's struggle to live and eat without participating in an unhealthy, unjust, and destructive food system. Has the global food system been irrevocably hijacked or is there still time to heal the planet, feed the world, and save ourselves?

GMO OMG also takes a critical look at the corporations who control what we eat. Last year, Monsanto and other food industry leaders spent $45 million to defeat a ballot in California that would require GMO labeling. And more recently, in an effort to combat labeling on food packaging, a conglomerate of biotech companies put up an informational website to disseminate their point of view on GMOs and try to make people feel safe about what they are eating.

Greening Your Microbusiness’ Environmental Footprint When You’re on a Micro-budget

Guest post by Susan Chambers

On more than one occasion over the last couple of years, I've heard heart-centred business owners declare that they'd love to make a positive difference in the world through their business—if they only knew how to get started transforming their business into a socially responsible entity. I've also encountered microentrepreneurs who express fears that going green will send them broke, and yet others who believe that their companies are too small to make a positive difference in the world.

I believe that everyone has the capacity to be a change agent and lead by example when (1) they have the information and resources (a network of like-minded individuals to call on for support or inspiration) to guide their actions, (2) they start from where they are and with what's available to them, and (3) they make changes through small, incremental steps. I also believe that with some thoughtful planning beforehand and along the way, adopting more planet-friendly business processes ultimately contributes to the overall value of a business; it enhances the sustainability of both the company and the planet.

You wouldn't set out on a journey without doing some planning beforehand, and the same wisdom applies to greening your company's environmental footprint (the overall impact your business has on the planet as a result of greenhouse gas emissions, waste production, and usage patterns for resources such as energy, water, renewable and non-renewable resources). Yes, the information gathering, decision making and planning take a bit of time, but in the long run it will keep you within your budget and on track, contribute to some small and encouraging successes, and keep you engaged in the process. Here are a few strategies to get you started.

1. Do a mini appraisal of your business so you have a clear idea of your motives, readiness, and capacity to go green. What financial, material, intellectual, and human resources do you have available to you? Are your investors, partners, employees, customers, vendors, etc, on board with your decision to green your business operations?

2. Do an inventory of the environmentally friendly business processes you already have in place. Give yourself some recognition and appreciation for what you've already accomplished: it's a better motivator than focusing on what you're not doing or dong well.

3. Measure your environmental footprint. You can either take DIY approach, or call in an expert to do the assessment, depending on the type and location of your business.

4. Based on the results of your actions in steps 2 and 3, write a list of the green business practices you want to implement, then look at the resources (money, time, people) that are currently available to you right now. Based on the resources available to you right now, choose two or three actions that are easy to implement immediately, won't cost you a cent, and will help you to start saving resources and money. (For example, using less energy translates into lower electricity bills; banishing bottled water saves both money and precious resources.)

5. You may discover that you have one or two "big ticket" items on your list that are not affordable in the short run—and you're not so sure how you are going to afford them in the longer run, either. If this is the case, set up a "green fund": direct the money saved from the cost-saving green strategies into a specially designated savings account, and use the money saved in that account to pay for those big ticket items.

Start from where you are, and take small steps that will yield some early successes on your path to greening your company's footprint. You'll find that the small steps add up to big changes-- and you didn't go broke in the process. So, are you ready, now, to step up as a change agent and lead by example?

Eco-Chic Aikiou Pet Feeders

The interactive dog feeder improves on the original design with reversible toecaps that allow customers to modify the pressure needed to open the food compartments, thereby making it more challenging and exciting for your pet.  The new design also makes it easier to fill the dish and is slightly shorter which allowed for a 15% reduction in production greenhouse gas.  The Aikiou dog bowl helps with weight control, digestive issues and stimulates your dog's brain. It is suited to dogs of all sizes.

For Dogs

The Aikiou Junior is a 3-in-one product serving as a food bowl, slow feeder and puzzle for your pet.

The BPA-free Aikiou Junior has six food openings and lets dogs use their sense of smell to find the food.  This allows Fido to eat in a way that is more natural to him.
Because your dog has to "hunt" for his food, it encourages slower eating patterns that help reduce bloating and overweight issues in dog.

For Cats

The Stimulo feeder improves on the original design with an easier to clean base and a new tube design that makes it even more fun for cats to get their food.  The product is made using only food grade BPA plastics.

The Stimulo is designed to allow cats to be their natural predator self and "hunt" for food.  The prior version of the Stimulo bowl was featured on Good Morning America and won Best in Show at the Global Pet Expo in 2012.

Sauvegarde Lavandes Provence

Follow greeninghollywd on Twitter
by Paige Donner

(Originally published on Digital Journal HERE)

Lavender is being threatened by insects that have also preyed on crops such as tobacco and tomatoes. Learn about the history of lavender and how advocacy groups are trying to save it from devastation.
You might not be aware of the fact that much of the world's production of fine lavender, the kind that is used in the finest perfumes and the finest body care products, such as those made by L'Occitane, is grown in France's Haute-Provence.
The region of Haute-Provence is part of the Cote d'Azur Alpes region of southern France. These high plateaus where the fine lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is grown, however, is an area of Provence just north of Aix-en-Provence that has remained just out of arm's reach of the mass influx of sun-worshipping tourists Provence has seen in the past decades... ever since the nearby town of Arles was made so famous by master painters like Van Gogh.
Unfortunately, though, the lavender has not remained out of harm's way, despite its elevated isolation. It has been under threat by a little insect, a sort of cicada known to scientists as "Hyalesthes obsoletus" that has been flourishing during the increase of heat waves and dry spells that the region has experienced since 1987, and in particular since 2003 when the region felt that extreme heat wave that spanned Europe. The insect thrives on... you guessed it, lavender.
Allow me to give a bit of a background here on lavender and just how important a crop this is to the region. First of all, picture in your mind those idyllic photos of lakes and lakes of lavender fields. This is the region where those photos originate. The L'Occitane products that supply their 2000 shops around the world - their entire lavender harvest is from this region. In fact, they purchase just about half the annual crop harvest of lavender produced in Haute-Provence, the region where the company was founded and is still, today, headquartered. In essence, the locals didn't nickname the little blue flower "blue gold" for nothin'.

Sirius XM Satellite's Green Is Good Radio Features Paige Donner, Founder Green Blog Network

Paige Donner,  journalist, blogger, eco-activist, actor/filmmaker and more, returns to the show from Paris to discuss her passion for local food and wine. Donner became more interested in the marriage of regional wines and local food when she was in British Columbia to cover the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Three and a half years later, her Local Food and Wine media platform and blog has spanned the globe, covering the world's great winemaking and local food producing regions. As her knowledge of the globe's wine regions grew, so too did her concern for how climate change could potentially impact viticultural areas.

Paige Donner

"Wine grapes have long been recognized by scientists as being the most sensitive agricultural crop in terms of climate change," Donner reveals. "What you see happening in wine regions [could preview] what is coming down the pike for other agricultural regions."

8-Day Makeover: Look Younger Naturally

Sponsored Post
8-Day SPRING Makeover

Look Younger Naturally

Shake up your daily routine, turn back the age clock, and bring out the best in your skin and your looks. Yes, all are possible, right now!  This plan will revitalize you, inside and out.  Result: Look and feel years younger…relaxed, radiant and renewed.
(*I recommend you start this on a Saturday so the relaxing day coincides with Sunday)
Go Green for your Skin and your Health

Spring is the perfect time for new beginning and to deepen or renew your “green” resolutions. Each time you are about to put something in or on your body, ask yourself the question,
“Is this bringing health, beauty and harmony to my body?”  If not, just don’t do it! Going green is about respecting yourself enough not to trash your beautiful body.

1.  Remove Toxins: Make sure that ALL your skincare and make-up is absolutely free of any toxic ingredients like preservatives or fragrance.  If not STOP using them at least for this 8-day makeover.  I cannot state this enough, more and more scientific studies show that these toxic ingredients are not only bad for your health, but they make you age faster by creating free radicals.

2.  BASIC 4 your Skincare Routine: Your regimen should include at least: Cleanse morning and night with gentle cleanser (nothing foaming on your skin), Tone, Day Cream, Night Cream.
If you’ve never experienced what our fresh skincare can do for your skin, try our 7-product Discovery Kit for only $29 (Value $75). This is a super complete beauty treatment.

3.  Add Exfoliation to your Skincare Routine: Every other day with our Jojoba Beads exfoliant.  This will slough off all dead winter skin. Don’t forget neck décolleté and hands. This Jojoba Beads Exfoliant is a real miracle worker; tough enough to remove dead skin cells, yet gentle enough not to damage fresh new ones. An absolute key to fresh glowing spring skin!

4.  GREEN your Diet: An easy way to achieve a “greener diet” is to start your day with a green smoothie. For those who missed my Green smoothie Detox, download the PDF for some great recipes.

5.  Go Meat and Dairy Free for a WeekI promise you will LOVE the results. First, you will shed off pounds; second, your skin will clear and glow; third, it will help all of us breathe better. The United Nations estimates that greenhouse gas emissions from meat/dairy production accounts for more than the combined emissions from planes, trains and automobiles. Scary no?

Replace meat with avocados  beans, lentils, quinoa, brown rice, and baked potatoes. Pair them with big mixed salads. Dare to mix greens and fruits like mangoes, apples, and pears… Top with a few nuts (walnuts, pecans, pine nuts, sunflower seeds) for a boost of omega 3s.  Dress with a little lemon juice and virgin olive oil.

6.  Choose Organic: This is the most powerful way you say NO to pesticides, hormones, and antibiotics, that all wreak havoc on your hormones with terrible consequences on both your skin and health.  Check out the dirty dozen, clean 15 lists.  I know organic is more expensive but when you go meat-dairy free your grocery bill becomes cheaper and SO much healthier!

7.  Go Outside and Take in Nature:
Spend at least 20 minutes outside today – and for the 7 days to come.  Soak in some 'vitamin G' (for green).  Mother Nature can be extremely therapeutic and the fresh air will do you, and your skin a world of good.

Day 2: Soothe and Relax

Relaxing never seems to make it onto the to-do list but today, relaxing is your to-do list!

1.  Make time for yourself: If you have kids, arrange for someone to take care of them. Book ½ day with yourself; write it in your agenda so you are sure to not miss the important meeting with yourself.

2.  Give yourself a facial: Run a nice hot bath; charge it with a few drops of essential oils. Let the steam from the water open your pores. Exfoliate with the Jojoba beads exfoliant to remove all dead skin cells. Rinse and follow with a thick layer of the Deep Hydration Masque to infuse your skin with revitalizing antioxidants.  Let it sit for 10 min, while you soak and rest in your bath. Rinse off masque, and with a loofah exfoliate your entire body. If you are courageous finish with a quick cold water shower.

3.  Pamper yourself: Get a massage, stay in bed all morning or do anything that makes you feel like a queen, you are one!

4.  Practice deep breathing and do it at least twice a day for the next 7 days, preferably at around the same time each day. This will help establish a breathing routine that calms you, refocuses your energy, and brings very soothing oxygen to stressed skin.  Here is one I like: Inhale and exhale through your nose, mentally counting "in-two-three, and then "pause-two-three” and then “out-two-three," During the pause, don't breathe in or out; just rest comfortably. Do this 5 times. Over time, increase the count to four ("in-two-three-four, out-two-three-four"), then to five, until you reach a number that's comfortable to you.

5.  Have Sex!  Yep, sex (with a partner or on your own) can help relax you and get your skin glowing again.

Stay green of course!

Day 3: Eat your Way to Younger Skin

You are already Greener since day one.  Remember that healthy glowing skin comes from proper skin care paired with an antioxidants rich diet. Plants are the only real source of antioxidant, with fish that is high in vitamin E.  Plant foods also have a very low amount of calories compared to animal food.  So, if you want to maintain a healthy weight, plant-based food is also a better choice.

1.  Replace your coffee with green tea and sip all day long.

2.  Drop ALL skin destroyers: Processed foods, alcohol, artificial sweeteners, soda (diet and regular), processed meats and cheeses, refined flour, sugar, saturated fats, fried food, cigarette smoking.

3.  Amp your intake of vitamin A, C, E rich food; checklist below.

Vitamin E, C and A

4.  Quench your thirst: Make sure you drink enough water. The rule is ½ your weight in oz. If you weigh 120lbs, you need to drink 60 oz. If you have a hard time with this add slices of lime, lemon, cucumber or mint in your water. Skin will wrinkle faster without adequate moisture. Just like the plant, when skin loses moisture, it gets dry.  Dry skin shows wrinkles more and causes skin to sag faster than it would normally. Skin will plump up nicely when the skin cells are hydrated.

Keep going green and relaxing!

Day 4: Get Moving

1.  Include at least 30 minutes of physical activity today, and schedule time for more active half hours over the next few days.  Choose something you enjoy.  There's no point in being miserable. The goal is to raise your heartbeat. Whether it's turning on some music and dancing, going for a power walk/run with your dog, taking a bike ride - there are plenty of options for doing your body good.  Exercise during the day helps you fall asleep at night and improves the quality of your beauty sleep. Just another one of the health benefits of physical activity.

2.  Treat Yourself to Something Special!  Reward yourself with an hour today or tomorrow (1 full hour) to do anything you'd like.  Get a nice hair cut/color, go shopping, have a mani/pedi or simply veg in front of the TV!

Remember to go green, relax and eat well!

Day 5: Have Fun

Laughter is the best medicine and is so good for your looks.  Happy vibes will do more for your looks; now that’s a facelift!  We are so caught up in busy schedules and responsibilities, we often forget that fun should be part of our day.

1.  Connect with a friend: Today schedule time to spend an evening of fun time with people who are meaningful in your life -- who make you laugh or inspire you.  Pick up the phone and call someone you love and who loves you.  Arrange for sharing a tea or maybe your 20 minutes in nature.  Try the co-counseling routine: If you are going to be 20 min together, each one gets 10 min to talk while the other one is only listening - Not offering advice or sharing their personal life experience.  This is all about expressing for one and listening for the other one. Then switch. You will be amazed at the result. Here are some subjects ‘What do you love about yourself?’  ‘What are you truly passionate about?’  ‘What makes you happy?’

Keep moving, eating right, going green and relaxing!

Day 6: Let your Inner Beauty Shine

"Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties." Hellen Keller

Inner Beauty is a concept used to describe the positive aspects of something that is not physically observable.  Feelings have dramatic effects on our beauty. We all have experienced days when we feel beautiful and other days when we feel just awful for no given reason.  When we are in love, it shows…Pregnant women have a radiating beauty…

Your face reflects your emotions.  Why do we smile on camera?  Because we look better with a happy feeling on our face rather than a feeling of anger, fear or resentment.

1.  Focus on the Positive. Try this tonight: Make a gratitude list for the day. Write down three great things that happened during your day. They don’t have to be out of this world. They can be as simple as the fact that you ate well all day, or that you hit a big deadline at work or that the sky at sunset was beautiful. Just three good things, simple as that!  Tomorrow when you wake up, before you get out of bed, bring to your mind three things that you are grateful for.  Again can be as simple as a bird singing.  At any time during the day when stress hits, recall your gratefulness and let it melt away the adverse effects of bad energy.

Continue to have fun, move your body, eat well, go green and relax!

Day 7: Beauty Sleep

Get More Beauty Sleep: If you don't have any early obligations today, sleep in as long as you like. If you have to get up early, take a nap later in the afternoon.  The ideal time for a nap is about 8 hours after you get up -- that's when your body temperature naturally takes a little dip (a sleep inducer); it's part of your normal biological rhythm.  So give in, and experience the beauty benefits of a little power nap.

How to Power Nap:
1.  Take off your shoes, and get comfy on a reclining chair, couch, or bed. Close the blinds, or turn away from any direct sunlight.
2.  Set an alarm for 30 minutes. That gives you 10 to fall asleep and 20 for your actual nap.
3.  Avoid napping after 3 p.m., it can disrupt your nighttime sleep.

Continue focusing on inner beauty, greening your life, having fun, moving your body, eating well and relaxing!

Day 8: Keep your Skin Glowing

CONGRATULATIONS!
You're about to complete our 8-Day Spring Make-Over!  You should be looking and feeling younger but also happier, healthier, proud of your accomplishment and more whole; less stressed, more you.

By continuing some of the new habits you've picked up in the last 8 days, you'll keep looking and feeling terrific, not just for now, but for life.  When it comes to staying young forever, preventative measures are more effective than treatments. People who work to maintain their youth are often in better physical shape and experience a sense of well-being that promotes good emotional health.

1.  Keep your personal care products free of toxins and your skincare routine consistent.

2.  Renew your commitment to your facial exfoliator.  As we age, our once-fresh complexion can start to look a little sallow.  To combat this, exfoliate — twice weekly, no excuses — and don’t forget the skin below your neck!

3.  Make a lemon pledge!
Skin-cell turnover slows as you age, causing your complexion to look uneven.  Combat this with a simple homemade peel: Apply two tablespoons of fresh lemon juice on your face using a cotton ball, avoiding your eye area.  Leave on for about 10 minutes, and then rinse with tepid water.

4.  Check your vitamin D level.  It is a simple blood test and most women are deficient.  A growing body of research shows that deficiency of the nutrient can trigger a slew of health problems.

To health and beauty,
